Fashion Insider: Bag Snob’s Tina Craig

Posted in Fashion Insider by SMUstyle on April 14, 2011

Yesterday, I formally met Tina Craig of the notorious blog, Bag Snob, after reading her fabulous blog and following her hilarious twitter account for many months.

Ms. Craig hosted a fun and super chic event at the at the Highland Park Diane von Furstenberg store with fellow fashion blogger and SMU junior Krystal Schlegel. A percentage of attendees’ purchases went towards the North Texas Food Bank. Given the opportunity to meet this self-proclaimed handbag enthusiast, I asked her some questions about her 6 years in the blogging business.

How did you get started in blogging?

In 2005, I just had gotten married and had a baby and he was about 6 months old and I was shopping all the time. I couldn’t really find any clothes because I had just had a baby, so all I would buy is bags. Since I was like 5 years old, I have always loved bags. I used to be an MTV VJ in Asia and LA and moved to Dallas. My business partner, Kelly Cook met while students at USC because we love bags. We have been buying each other bags ever since. She was in the fashion industry in New York and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. So while I was buying bags, I kept sending some to Kelly. Kelly’s husband is a software engineer and he set up the blog for us, so that we could have our own conversation about bags. He bought came up with Bag Snob because “we’re such snobs about bags”.

Six years ago, no one was blogging about couture bags. While I was living in New York and doing the charity circuit, I would be meeting with a designer, such as Michael Kors, and I would tell them that I am blogging now and ask for an interview. They didn’t really know what that was, but they didn’t want to say no because you’re such a good client. I was kind of pen pals with a writer in England and she ended up writing an article about us in British Vogue. That’s how the blog really got started.

Since founding Bag Snob in 2005, how has blogging and fashion media changed?

It has completely changed! Before we were kind of considered renegades and PR people didn’t really know what to do with us. Now, it’s complete 180, where they are courting us. Back then, even my husband would say don’t tell people you’re a blogger, but now everyone is a blogger. There is always room for a fresh voice.

What is the essential bag for a young woman?

I would do anything to Phillip Lim, which some are large enough to fit to a MAC or IPad, or Derek Lam. Because those designers are good brands, but still young and edgy.

What is your favorite bag for spring?

The Proenza Schouler PS11 — I love it in Kelley green and crocodile.

What is your advice for students who want to blog or get into the fashion industry?

Work hard, be dedicated, and be passionate about it. If you don’t love it, don’t blog about it because it will show through in your writing. If it doesn’t make you crazy like teenage love don’t blog about it.

It was such a pleasure to meet this blogging trailblazer, Tina Craig! You can keep updated on all her bag lusts daily at BagSnob.com. If handbags aren’t your fashion fetish, check out Beauty Snob, Couture Snob, Tot Snob, Jewel Snob, and Shoe Snob-I guess what Ms. Craig is really trying to say is somewhere there is a snob in all of us!
