Beauty Blast: Shop For The Cure

Posted in Shop Savvy by SMUstyle on October 20, 2011

Besides the first signs of fall, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. As estimated by the American Cancer Society there were “about 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women,” for the United States in 2011. It was announced Monday morning, October 17, on the Today show that E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic has been diagnosed with having early stages of breast cancer.

Many companies take part in promoting awareness for this cause and there are easy and fun ways for you to do your part. As stylista’s you can shop these great beauty products and give to the cause. An added plus is that the official color of breast cancer awareness is pink and is incorporated into the products.

Shop Savvy: Fall Coats

Posted in Shop Savvy by SMUstyle on October 17, 2011

Fall 2011 is the season for coats. Runways have never shown such range, from sleek minimalism and elegant capes, to edgy leather and cozy parkas. Here are some of the trendiest styles for this fall with some budget-friendly options.

Capes can easily translate a simple outfit into a standout look. Capes were seen in Fall runway shows like Rag and Bone, and can be styled with a classic pair of skinny jeans. Check out this  Vince Camuto Button Neck Cape.

Parkas are the most practical and cozy option for coats. This versatile coat can be paired with anything from a dress to a cozy cable knit sweater for an effortless look. I love this ASOS Parka.

Leather is a leading trend this Fall, so a leather jacket is a definite must-have. This jackets versatility lends to its demand, and it’s no wonder designers like Alexander Wang and Derek Lam included this statement piece in their Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collections. Leather jackets can be worn with a flowy dress for a contrasting outfit, and with slim pants and metallic accents for an edgy look. This MICHAEL Michael Kors Distressed Leather Moto Jacket is a must have.

Shearling instants provides a luxurious, yet sporty feel to any outfit. Shearling jackets can be paired with classic jeans, dresses, and sweaters for a lush yet practical fall look. You’ll love this Urban Code Wool Shearling Panel Biker Jacket .

Military jackets can instantly add a sporty yet tough feel to any outfit. Opt for jackets with accents like buckles and utilitarian hues to toughen up any ensemble.

Double Breasted Coat

Minimalist jackets are a great choice for anyone that wants a safer option that will work for several seasons. Minimalist coats, like this Round Neck Frock Coat add a tomboy flair to any outfit, and are versatile enough to carry off several outfits.

Shop Savvy: Bootglams

Posted in Shop Savvy by SMUstyle on September 26, 2011

While at the L’Oréal Paris Collier Strong-Ulta event in Arlington, I met a fabulous fashionista, Erica Johnson.  She designs for Bootglams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  They create unique and sophisticated accessories to revive your “oldie but goodie” shoes.  After meeting Erica, I perused the website,, and found that Bootglams come in a variety of colors and materials, from crystals to feathers.   I love the concept, and the Bootglams looked fabulous on Erica, and the models at the event.  Definitely a new trend for SMU Stylistas to check out!

Shop Savvy: Fall Fur

Posted in Shop Savvy by SMUstyle on September 22, 2011
It may be hard to believe, but fall is fast approaching! It’s time to start thinking about your fall wardrobe, and one of the leading trends is fur. With designers like Chanel, Fendi, and Michael Kors including this dynamic trend in their Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collections, fur is the way to go.

Brandy Lunsford

I recently met up with Neiman Marcus Last Call’s Stylist Brandy Lunsford for some insight about looking chic this fall. The first look combines two trends- layering and fur. This is a great way to transition a comfy daytime look for a night out, by adding these unique booties and trendy fur vest.

Grey shirt: WRLT $55 (regular $96)
Fur Vest: Adrienne Lanau, $290 (regular $450)
Grey Pants: Marc by Marc Jacobs, $179 (regular $248)
Striped Tank: Madigan, $39 (regular $248)
The second look shows how a fur poncho can add edge to a classic tee. What I love about this look is its practicality and flair!
Black Shirt: James Perse, $59 (regular $90)

Stop by Neiman Marcus Last Call at 5550 West Lover’s Lane, Suite 147, for a similar look and great deals. Or shop online.

Obviously this fall is all about layering! This daytime look could take you to night easily. Just add some sparkle and you’re set!

Shop Savvy: Missoni for Target

Posted in Shop Savvy by SMUstyle on September 13, 2011

The much-anticipated Missoni for Target collection was launched this morning at 8 am.  Missoni is an Italian fashion house known for iconic knitwear and colorful zigzag stripes.  I arrived at Target around 8:45, and much to my surprise, it was all gone!  I hurried to another location… sold out.  Without much hope, I went to a third Target, and I was lucky to score 2 headbands, 2 shirts, a sweater, a jacket, and a portfolio from the collection all for under $250!  But I had to grab it fast because within a few minutes, other fashionistas had cleared out the entire stock!

The collection is very expensive-looking and unique.  My favorite piece is the black and white zigzag cap-sleeve t-shirt for $29.99.  And of course, the headbands are fabulous fall accessories for only $7.99 each.  I tried to order more pieces from the collection online, but unfortunately, Target’s website has been crashed most of the day due to the high demand.  Just another thing for us stylistas to stress over!  If you are a high-fashion fanatic, I would call Target and ask when they will restock these items, check online (when the website is up and running again!), and go to Target to sweep up this fantastic collection.  Zigzag over to Target!
