Fashion Insider: Gilt City Dallas

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on October 11, 2011

Gilt Groupe changed the face of online shopping when it was founded in 2007, drawing over three million members to its opulent offers. While bargain shopping is infamous for overcrowded sales, supposedly hidden imperfections, and triple XL sizes, Gilt Groupe brought much needed luxury to the realm of e-commerce and bargain shopping. Gilt Groupe recently added a luxury extension named Gilt City, which offers exclusive deals to members in ten markets across the US, including Dallas. Gilt City offers are infinite, from extravagant dinners and exclusive concerts to fashion show tickets and advance screenings. I spoke with Melanie Schanz, Market Lead for Gilt City Dallas, about Fall must-haves and online shopping tips.

1. What is unique about Dallas in terms of Gilt City?

Dallas has an amazing Gilt Groupe member base, so it only made sense to consider Dallas for a potential Gilt City market. It’s very clear that Dallasites love the good life. From fashion to arts to dining and entertainment, Dallas has everything that an ideal Gilt City market needs. There’s a classic strength, amazing history and vibrant future and we’re excited to show our members all the fabulous ways to love Dallas more!

2. How would you define Dallas style?

Eclectic. From classic to bling to haute couture and a little rich hippie mixed in, Dallas style is a little bit of everything. The defining element of Dallas style is that the Dallas woman is always put together. Even the workout outfit demonstrates a thoughtful approach to style.

3. Gilt Dallas offers a variety of discounts, what do you think Dallas residents should keep an eye out for when shopping online?

The exclusive offers. Everything we write about is hand selected as the best that Dallas has to offer. But even better than best is exclusive. We provide amazing events with limited availability that go quickly.  Best tip – keep an eye out for your email at 10am every day…and if the offer sells out, be sure to add to the waitlist. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll get your wish.

4. What are the biggest trends you’re seeing right now?

For menswear it’s looks from retailers like C Bespoke who we’re featuring on now. They offer a remix of old classics that look effortless. For womenswear, it’s colors & prints (plaids and animal prints), leather & opulent accessories.

 5. What are some must-haves for this Fall?

Flared, colored, denim jeans, leather mini skirts and pants, maxi dresses and oversized bib necklaces. Gilt City Dallas will be featuring the best shopping experiences and access to local designers and retailers to keep our city on trend!

Fashion on Film: Fashion TV on Bravo

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on October 5, 2011

From the styling shenanigans on The Rachel Zoe Project to the decadent wardrobes of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Bravo is the channel for fashion entertainment.  Two new shows, Mad Fashion and Fashion Hunters will be premiering this October on Bravo.

Project Runway alum Chris March is back again in Mad Fashion, a profile of Chris and his eccentric, one-of-a-kind designs for high-profile celebrity clients.  Just like Project Runway, he pushes the limits and creates fashion fantasies.

Fashion Hunters follows fashionistas raid the closets of New York’s elite looking for designer treasures for their upscale resale store Second Time Round in New York.

Watch Mad Fashion at 10/9c and Fashion Hunters at 10:30/9:30c on Tuesday October 4 on Bravo.  Make it a night of fashion and watch The Rachel Zoe Project at 9/8c.  I know I will be glued to the TV Tuesday night.

Fashion on Film: Bill Cunningham New York to open at Dallas Angelika

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on April 3, 2011

Whether you like fashion or not, I highly recommend you take the time to see Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary on New York Times Fashion and Social Photographer Bill Cunningham.  I had the opportunity to see the inspiring film a year ago during a single Dallas screening at The Dallas International Film Festival and  to this day I am still raving about it! The film is absolutely charming and takes you inside the day-to-day life of the adorable 80+ year-old Cunningham.

If you like fashion or photography or film or simply just appreciate amazing individuals then take time to check-out the flick.

The documentary opens at the Dallas Angelika Friday, April 8.

Fashion on Film: SMU freshman presents at New York Fashion Week

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on February 21, 2011

SMU freshman and international fashion designer Kira Plastinina presented her Fall 2011 collection LUBLU Kira Plastinina at New York Fashion Week this past Thursday. The young designer’s high-end collection was sleek, modern and sophisticated a far cry from her earlier designs as a pre-teen (I actually went to her old boutique on Robertson Blvd in LA 5 years ago — the store was mega-girly, sparkley and pink). I just returned from New York Fashion Week, where I attended her presentation and had the opportunity to see the collection up-close. I was surprised at how elegant and well-made LUBLU was and I honestly could see myself in many of the pieces. My favorite looks included a chic nude silk jumpsuit, a bold red strapless tea-length dress and a fierce leather and fur frock.

I’m dying to-try on and shop the line. We’ll keep you posted on what Dallas-area stores pick-up the line. Neimans? Stanley Korshak? Tootsies? Get on this and support a Dallas/SMU girl!

Fashion on Film: Campus Closets with Ryley Tice

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on November 14, 2010

SMUstyle’s Grace Davis steps inside junior Ryley Tice’s closet for this week’s episode of ‘Campus Closets.’ For this art history major fashion is art, and her unique look and innovative personal styling techniques always turn heads on campus. Ryley’s closet is stocked with an eclectic mix of vintage and designer finds. The coolest part is Ryley’s closet is literally her room. Her closet has no doors, instead she has book shelves next to her desk for shoes and a free standing clothing rack against her wall.

Fashion on Film: Campus Closets with Krystal Schlegel

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on November 9, 2010

For this this week’s episode of ‘Campus Closets’ SMUstyle steps inside SMU junior Krystal Schlegel’s closet. Krystal’s closet is loaded with Chanel jackets, a pair of studded Christian Louboutin pumps, fur vests, vintage jewelry, Alexander Wang tees and Tory Burch tops. Krystal keeps her closet tidy and has all of her clothes organized by style and color. What’s best about her closet is her perfectly alined nail polish collection, easily accessible for color coordinating her mani pedi with her day-to-day outfits. Love Krystal’s style? Fashion on Film: ‘True Prep’ Authors come to Dallas

Posted in Fashion on Film by SMUstyle on November 2, 2010

SMUstyle attends the Dallas book signing of new book “True Prep” for this week’s ‘Fashion on Film’ segment.
The 1980s cult-classic “The Preppy Handbook” was the guide for the seersucker-wearing, Nantucket-vacationing, and boarding school-attending country club class. Author Lisa Birnbach not only officially defined a fashion genre, but she also put into terms exactly how to live a “preppy” lifestyle. The book satirically outlined the acceptable boarding schools, vacation spots, debutante balls, clothing brands, societal clubs, sporting activities and etiquette essential for being the ultimate prep.

Thirty years later Birnbach introduces the sequel to the now out-of-date handbook, “True Prep: It’s a Whole New World.” The new manual tackles everything modern day “preppies” need to know, from the best spa-like rehab facilities, to how to acquire the right attorney to clean your not-so-spotless record, and what brands are considered proper prep attire, such as Tory Burch and JCrew.
